Affiliate marketing can be a great way to monetize your blogs. You are already linking out to products in your posts, so you might as well be paid for the work that you are doing, right? Today on the blog you are going to learn how to increase affiliate income as a blogger.
1. Ease Into Affiliate Marketing By Finding Programs For Products You Have Already Talked About And Love
If you are new to this discussion and wondering how to do affiliate marketing with a blog, start with something you already know. Instead of finding new products to talk about try to link up products you already love and talk about. To do this quickly, think about the links that already get clicked on your blog. Can you join affiliate programs, so those lead to affiliate links instead of regular links? If so, switch those links today.
2. Make Sure Your Audience Is In A Buying Mood With The Language You Use (Especially In Your Headline)
Consider the following headlines:
- 5 Affordable Fall Blouses
- 5 Affordable Fall Blouses You Need To Purchase Today
Which headline are you more likely to purchase from? The one telling you about the fall blouses, or the one telling you that you need to buy the fall blouses. This is a subtle trick, but it works to open up the mind. Instead of looking at the fall clothes, you are taking this headline a step further by letting your audience know that they need to purchase these items.
Let’s take a look at how a site like Bustle puts you in the buying mood:
In this article, Bustle talks about temperature-keeping stainless steel thermoses, that’s a mouthful, but this headline sets the scene for anyone wanting to purchase. They are telling you that you don’t want to go another day without these thermoses, priming you to click add to cart. This way, if you click on this article, the thought that you can’t live without these thermoses is already in your head.
This tip is about priming your audience, so you get more qualified traffic. Those people who click through on your article are more likely to purchase because they have seen your headline, and they want to know more.
3. Survey Your Audience To Get To Know What They Want To Purchase
You can’t assume what your audience wants, but you also can’t go out and say “what do you want to purchase so I can sell products to you more effectively?” Everyone could be an affiliate marketer if that were the case. You need to be smarter about this. Use social media polling features so you can learn little snippets about your audience. For example, if you were a book blogger you might ask questions like:
- What’s the most you have ever spent on a book?
- What’s your favorite book genre?
- How many pages does your favorite book have?
- What are your favorite places to purchase books?
- What format do you like to see book reviews in?
By coming up with these small questions, you can get to know your audience and store away this information for later. With time you can come up with an excellent audience profile that you can use to sell to your audience more effectively.
4. Promote Within Your Audience’s Means
I know, the sound of making a million dollars from one affiliate sale sound dreamy. Unfortunately, for most (if not all) people, that million dollar sale will never come. Your audience likely has a budget, and you should never try to promote products that your readers cannot afford. There are probably some products your audience will splurge on (which we will talk about later), but overall, you want to promote things your audience can afford. A bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush!
5. Tell A Story, Don’t List The Features
Listing features gets you nowhere, especially when you are working with affiliate programs that aren’t necessary. There aren’t many affiliate programs that address people’s needs, most of them address wants. Don’t list features, tell a story if you’re going to increase affiliate marketing conversions.
Instead of selling a fancy pen by saying the ink won’t smudge, tell them how it felt to confidently sign the deed to your first rental property with a pen you could depend on. Instead of saying the book has 400 pages divided into 20 chapters, tell your readers how the book impacted your life and the way you see the world.
It’s all in your storytelling abilities, not your feature listing abilities.
Let’s try this out right now. Sell this umbrella you see in the photo below to your ideal audience.
Now, take your selling abilities a step further. Sell the first item you see in the room around you to your audience. Remember, tell a story, don’t list the features!
6. Link Directly To Products You Are Discussing
Deep linking (or linking directly to products) is debated when it comes to affiliate marketing because links change often and it can be hard to keep track of when things will be available. Deep linking, though, can help you convert people who don’t feel like going through all the extra steps to purchase a product. Many internet users want what they want as quickly as possible. By giving them direct links to the products you are discussing you can increase conversions and get more people to add your products to their carts.
7. Create Branded Links To Affiliate Products For Social Media Links
Affiliate links can be pretty lengthy. With all the tracking on top of the actual URL, links can be hard to share on places like social media. Instead of giving out the entire link, use a plugin like Pretty Links to shorten your link using your domain. Instead of sharing a long link to promote your website host, you can create a link like YourDomain.com/YourWebsiteHost. Can you imagine how much easier that would be to promote over a long affiliate link?
8. Automate Affiliate Marketing Messages On Social Media
People need to see your affiliate messages often to feel comfortable buying your affiliate products. Doing this on your own is hard. If you use a social media scheduler like MeetEdgar or SmarterQueue, though, you can create a folder full of affiliate messages that you can automate to go live on social media regularly. You may want to sit down and create a bunch of affiliate messages in one day to upload to your scheduler. Set it and let them rotate the messages so you can work on creating other affiliate content. Every blue moon, update that section of your scheduler with up to date affiliate messages, so your posts never get stale.
9. Optimize And Learn From Posts That Are Currently Making You Money With Affiliate Marketing
If a post is bringing you affiliate income, it’s time to double down on those posts and learn from them. Read through those posts or watch those videos. What did you do differently that seems to resonate with your audience? How can you use that information to make that post more successful or make other affiliate posts more successful?
10. Let Your Readers Know How The Product You Are Promoting Has Genuinely Made Your Life Better
When you are an affiliate marketer, you have to be a storyteller. Again, don’t just list features. How has this software made your life easier or better? Your audience trusts you to tell them why this is a necessary tool for them. Open up about how you use the tool to make your life or career better. People respond to personal stories; you want to make sure they can see those anecdotes in your affiliate marketing messages.
11. Create A Spreadsheet To Track Your Affiliate Marketing Links And Websites
If you want to promote using affiliate marketing, chances are you will be using a variety of sites and joining quite a few affiliate marketing programs. Instead of wondering where all your links are, create an easy to use spreadsheet with all your login information and main affiliate links. With a spreadsheet, you can quickly grab things when you need them and sort things appropriately. Don’t forget to add your affiliate sale percentage, so you always have access to that number when you are adding links to blog posts.
12. Use Video To Get People More Excited About Using Your Favorite Products And Tools
Video reviews are beneficial for taking your product reviews to the next level. By showing your readers how to do something, you can create a much more powerful argument for why they need to purchase or sign up for your favorite tools and products. The videos don’t need to be amazing or high-quality. You could even take a video of your screen with a voice-over instead of showing your face.
13. Create A Mini-Course Around Products You Want To Make Money From
Courses are seen as extremely valuable, especially ones with video content attached. By creating a small course around products you want to promote, you can make money and build your reputation at the same time. For example, as a photographer, you may create a mini-course around using various camera equipment you are an affiliate for. You may create a program about how to use Lightroom Presets while you tell them about your favorite ones to use as a wedding photographer.
14. Promote Products That Offer A Higher Sale Percentage
If you want to increase affiliate income as a blogger, you need to promote products that offer a higher sale percentage. Instead of selling products that provide 5% or less, go for products that offer you a 30-50% affiliate percentage. You will typically find higher affiliate percentages on digital products like courses and eBooks. People are making courses for everything now, don’t be afraid to promote those types of products.
15. Create A Resources Page For People In Your Niche
A great resource page can become a fantastic place to promote your affiliate links. Make sure that your resource page includes more than just affiliate links, but including a few here and there never hurt anyone. As long as you create your page to genuinely help other people, your page will be seen as helpful, not salesy.
Check out our recommendations page from Money Done Right to see this in action.
16. Get To Know What Your Audience Will Splurge On
We all have something that we will spend extra money on. For some of us, it’s clothes or good coffee or a car. If you know what your audience will splurge on, you can promote those types of affiliate programs if they are appropriate for your brand. For example, a lifestyle blogger may become an affiliate for a travel company because they know that their audience values experiences like travel and will splurge on their next holiday.
17. Advertise Pages On Your Site That Have A High Affiliate Conversion Rate
Do you want to make more money with affiliate marketing? Well, advertise pages that work! If you have a great review with a fantastic conversion rate of people who read/watch to people who purchase, lean into that. Put your money where your mouth is with a great advertising push, so more people see your message and decide to make a purchase. You need to be careful about putting advertising dollars behind anything haphazardly. Remember that your plan is to make money. You want to make sure that you put just enough money into your advertising campaign to see purchases and a profit.
18. Reevaluate Posts That Are Getting Clicks But Not Purchases
Clicks are terrific because they are the first steps to an actual purchase, but clicks alone will not make decent affiliate income unless you are paid per click. Evaluate posts that are getting clicks, but not purchases. How could you make the language in that post better? How can you increase conversions? Maybe the post was written before you had a working knowledge of what gets people in the buying mood, and if that’s the case, a few tweaks should make your post more profitable.
19. Work With The Company To Get A Coupon Code For Affiliate Marketing Purposes
Everyone loves saving money. An easy way to increase affiliate conversions is to offer a coupon code to your readers. Be aware that you may make less money because of the coupon usage, but it could also have the opposite effect. A good coupon may make you spend just as much or more money than you originally wanted to spend.
20. Host A Webinar With The Company You Are Trying To Promote (Or A Business Friend Who Also Promotes The Company)
Joint-Venture or JV webinars are insanely popular. Both you and your partner gain subscribers and get to know the needs of the people in your audience. By hosting a webinar, you can build authority and make a decent amount of money at the same time. If you have a more expensive tool you are selling; a JV webinar is a great way to convince people that they need to purchase what you are selling.
You could use the webinar as a demo showing people how to use the tool you are an affiliate for OR you could use the webinar to talk about something else that leads into your affiliate sale. For an example of the latter option, you could do a webinar on preparing to start a blog in 2019 where you share an affiliate link for your website host or any other affiliate products you love to use as a blogger.
21. Offer A Bonus For People Who Use Your Affiliate Link
If you have access to the names and email addresses of people who purchase using your affiliate link, offer them a bonus for using your link. Bonuses are great if you are promoting a course or digital product. Once you get the list of people who used your link, you can send them one of your digital products, offer a one-on-one strategy session, or any number of bonuses for them.
22. Cut Out The Noise By Sending People To Affiliate Marketing Landing Pages
Do you want to make the most impact when it comes to affiliate marketing? Cut out the noise and distractions for your readers. Instead of sending them to a noisy page with sidebars and advertisements to distract them, strip it down for them. Send them to a page that is focused on the information they need to know. Everything should be focused on strategically placed links to your affiliate offer. Get rid of the sidebar, get rid of the moving advertisements, create focus.
23. Promote New Or Innovative Products
Everyone is an Amazon affiliate these days. It can be hard for even the most seasoned affiliate marketer to make money with Amazon because their market is so saturated, even though Amazon has hundreds of thousands of products available. If you want to stand out as an affiliate marketer, you need to promote new or innovate products in your niche. Don’t push the book that everyone is recommending or the movie that everyone has already seen. Dig into the archives of whatever you are promoting to find those hidden gems to promote.
24. Compare Affiliate Programs To See If You Could Be Making More Money By Promoting The Same Company
Many companies use various affiliate companies. You never know how much you can earn by just switching to another affiliate company. If the company you want to promote is on multiple networks, compare the affiliate networks and see which one offers better deals or even more affiliate support. By doing your due diligence, you can find the program that will be better for you.
25. Talk With Your Affiliate Marketing Manager To See If You Can Negotiate A Higher Affiliate Percentage
Even making a percent or two more than the base commission rate can make a difference as to how much you make with affiliate marketing. From the start of any affiliate relationship, you should get to know your manager so you can get tips on how to sell their products better. Once you have made the company a decent amount in net sales, see if you negotiate for a higher percentage by letting your manager know you are interested.
26. Use Different Types Of Affiliate Links (Not Just Pay Per Sale)
Many people gravitate toward Pay Per Sale affiliate programs, but there are many cool programs that are Pay Per Click, Pay Per Lead, or Pay Per Call. If you are looking to expand your affiliate marketing sales, you may want to check out other types of affiliate links so you can expand the money you can make.
27. Create Different Strategies Based On Cookie Length
When someone clicks on your Amazon link, they have 24 hours to convert, unless of course, they click on another person’s Amazon link before they check out with yours which is highly possible. Your Amazon strategy needs to be very different from the approach you have with a smaller company where your tracking cookie last 30 or even 60 days. Think about the conversions you are trying to make and how fast you want to convert people when using specific affiliate links. Change the urgency of the language you use to work with different affiliate programs.
